Antivirus Companies Cannot Keep Up!

(Paraphrase) By Paul F. Roberts

Antivirus companies are reporting that they cannot keep up with the tide of endless viruses and spyware, which are plaguing the internet.  Ten years ago, teenagers made the viruses working alone in their bedrooms.  Today professional criminals have moved in and targeted critical weaknesses in many antivirus programs: their reliance on malicious-code signatures to spot threats.

Just imagine, while paying your credit card bills on line, a program in your computer is silently monitoring your actions.  Taking snap shots of the pages that you are visiting and forwarding the information to advertisers-IF YOU ARE LUCKY.  Today it may be an online banking Trojan that is sending your personal information to Brazil or South Korea---or who knows where.  The details are sketchy and vary, but one thing is certain:  the current antivirus protection is sparse against the threats that face internet users today.

Kapersky Lab said that a steady rise in stealthy programs has risen steadily from January 2005 to April.   They are hiding them better.  Eric Chien at Symantec stated the stealth programs are infiltrating legal and quasi-legal advertising software and its getting worse.

One thing all of the anti-virus companies believe is that the detection of harmful code must be stepped up.  Script checkers, behavior blockers, anti-phising, anti-rootkit and firewalls are just some of the guards needed to slow down the onslaught of harmful code entering into your computer.  However, will that mess with a few of the good codes as well?

In the end, even layered detection technologies cannot stop those who are determined to open malicious e-mail, visit disreputable web sites or click on doubtful URLs or worse yet ”turn their antivirus program off.  Remember it only takes 1 (one) virus to ruin your computer or network.

Today your desktop, laptop, or workplace computer is being effectively attacked.  Tomorrow, your cell phone, pda, TV, security system, and even your automobile will be the target of attack.  Just imagine, your on the freeway traveling at 70 mph, bumper to bumper and your on-star system is saying your car is stolen and cuts off the engine then cuts it on again in 2 minutes, then cuts it off, and so on and so on....

Today, there are three different kinds of antivirus programs.

1.) They block the ports that viruses come through

2.) They delete the viruses after they enter into your computer.

3.) They use both 1.) and 2.)

It is best to have both or 3.), however once the virus or spyware or malware, or worm has entered into your computer the damage is done.  Especially if it attached itself or assumed a critical operational file.

Most good antivirus application protect your email, files,  macros, scripts and your network.   But, it will not protect against the bad code that you ----- let in.  The email is the easiest entry into any computer because of online email that 99% of the antivirus programs cannot protect against until it has entered into your machine and done its damage.

One of the worst is yahoo email, in which millions of people use it.  It is safe to assume that anyone using yahoo email has viruses of some kind in their computers. This is a fact because yahoo cannot keep up with the different virus that are attacking computers and your antivirus program does not protect against it.

Most professional IT personal, will warn you against using unprotected online email, but to be popular and stay in the loop online communication programs are what is being used by any and everyone that can.

Limit the employees from using online programs such as yahoo or myspace. Limit spam email, (you know the one that states "you can make 1 million dollars").  Restrict the word sex in the URL.  Close ports that are not in use.
